Chinese Technology Amongst The Best In The World Alan Phillips is a 33 year veteran of the aluminium industry with considerable international experience in smelting and research. He is a chemical engineer by profession with a Master's Degree in that field. In a recent interview he described the design of the ALUTRINT Complex as sound. He said "ALUTRINT will be using modern Chinese technology which is far and away, among the best available today. 11 will be a combined facility which includes a smelter and downstream plants which will take the liquid metal and transform it into value-added products. The ALUTRINT smelter is relatively small, producing only 125,000 tonnes per year whereas many aluminium complexes around the world are very big. The Dubai smelter for instance, is approximately 730,000 tonnes per year. The smelter in Bahrain is about 830,000 tonnes and there are plans to expand it to 1,000,000 tonnes!" He emphasized that in modern smelters such as the ALUTRINT smelter there are stringent controls to trap all emissions and process them. "The design for the ALUTRINT Complex is sound and with good training and management there should be little, if any, fugitive emissions," Mr. Phillips said. Mr. Phillips added that the ALUTRINT Complex will also bring significant social and economic benefits. He added, "An area with a high unemployment rate such as La Brea should receive a lot of benefits since many jobs will be created. I n addition, new skills will be introduced into the country and local people will be learning to operate different parts of the smelter as well as the downstream plants."
